Attendance
A student not actually on campus at the time attendance is taken may be considered in attendance if the student is temporarily absent due to an appointment with a health care professional and if that student commences classes or returns to school on the same day of the appointment with a note from the health care professional or parent.

In the event of an absence, the parent/guardian should call the Attendance Office at 817-547-5013 to inform the school that the student will not be present.  If telephone contact is not made, a note must be taken to the Attendance Office the day the student returns to school.  In the secondary schools, this should be done before a student reoprts to his/her 1st period class so the student may obtain an "admission to class" pass.

A student absent for any reason is expected to make up specific assignments missed and/or to complete additional in-depth study asssigned by the teacher to meet subject or course requirements.  A student who does not make up assigned work within the time allotted by the teacher will receive a grade of zero for the assignment.

A student absent from school for any reason may not be allowed to participate in school related activities on that day or evening.

A student absent from school or class without parental permission will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action.

Regular school attendance is a vital part of a child's potential acedemic success.  Students in grade 1 - 8 must attend school for a minimum of 90% of the 180 days (162 days) of school during the regular school year or they may not be promoted.  Students absent more than 10% (9 days per semester) may appeal for extenuating circumstances to the campus attendance committee. See the Assistant Principal for additional information, if needed.

Lost textbooks must be paid for before receiving a replacement.  Damaging textbooks will result in a fine.

Cafeteria Information
Breakfast is available from 7:30 - 7:52 am only.  Students must use the side door to the cafeteria. Once you've come to the cafeteria you may not leave without a pass (this includes going to tutorials or d-hall).   Parents are allowed to bring lunch to their child, however new state laws allow you to bring lunch to your child only.  (Sorry no pizza parties at lunch)  If you have any questions regarding your child's account, please contact the cafeteria manager at (817)547-5030.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices
Cell phones, ipods, mp3's, CD players and electronic games are only allowed to be used before and after school. They may not be on during the school day. If a student has detention, these items may not be on during that time. There is a $15.00 fee for the return of any confiscated electronic devices.

Conduct and Discipline
We encourage students to learn and accept responsibility for their actions and decisions while at Smithfield Middle School.  We endeavor to guide students to be of good character, to accept responsibility, to be honest and trustworthy, to be understanding, to be caring and to be respectful.  We feel these are the attributes that will make them successful, not only in school, but in life as well.

If there is persistant misbehavior, after school detention, Saturday school detention (8:00 - 12:00) or home suspension is used.  Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct for details.

Please do not bring the following items to school:

  • Permanent markers
  • Gum
  • Cameras
  • Aerosol cans
  • White out substances
  • Toys (including rubberbands, staples & other items disruptive to the classroom)

It is not a good idea to bring electronic devices to school.  If they are lost or stolen, the school is not responsible.

The following conduct is prohibited:

  • Loitering atfer 4pm
  • Being in an unassigned locker or locker bank
  • Running/chasing
  • Engaging in loud behavior in the halls or locker banks

Resolving Conflict

With School Personnel: District policy states that students should first attempt to resolve conflict with teachers.  If conflict is not settled, the parent should call the teacher.  If, after a phone or personal conference between the parent and teacher, there is still a problem, call or make an appointment with an administrator.

With Another Student: Always try to work out conflicts first with the other person or with the help of a teacher.  If a teacher is unable to help, contact Mr. Eager.  If the situation does not get better, contact Ms. Spurlock.

Crime Stoppers

If you have anything stolen or have any information about a crime, please contact the Student's Resource Officer, Officer Litke.

Dress Code
Please refer to the front of the SAM for the district & campus dress code regulations.

Early Dismissals
Students who leave the building during the school day must be cleared through the Attendance Office.  A note from the parent/guardian requesting the early dismissal should be brought to the Attendance Office before the student's 1st period class.  The note must include the date, full name, grade, reason for dissmissal, parent's signature and phone number where they can be reached.

With the teacher's permission, students who become ill during the school day may report to the school nurse.  The nurse will decide whether or not the student should be sent home and will notify the student's parents. Students are not allowed to use cell phones or make outside calls.

If you do not send a note requesting an early dismissal for your student, you must come to the office to sign your student out.  The student will be called to the office at that time.  Any person picking up a child must be listed on the enrollment card.

Lockers
The lockers are the property of the school and the school maintains control of the lockers and other school property at all times and may be subject to inspection and/or search at any time whether or not the student assigned to the locker is present.  Do not share locker combinations with anyone!  The consequence of sharing a locker or being in an unassigned locker bank is a 30 minute detention.

Students may not change from their assigned locker without permission from a teacher and/or assistant principal.  Combination locks are required by ALL students at Smithfield Middle School for their regular school locker and PE (physical education) locker.  This will provide more security for your child's supplies and personal items.  The combination for their school locker will be reported to their 2nd period teacher and Mrs. Spurlock.

It is recommended that students purchase a twin or triple lock pack.  All locks in the pack have the same combination and the triple pack provides a back-up in the event of a lock being lost.  Please purchase only standard combination locks.  We recommend Masterlock locks.

Lost and Found
The school is not responsible for lost or damaged items.  Found items will be placed in the main office for the first week and then removed to an alternate location.  Please check with Mrs.Hunt in the main office if you have lost an item.

Make-up Work
It is the responsibility of the individual student to make arrangements with each teacher for make-up work following each absence.  The procedure shall be as follows:
            Days Absent                    Make-up work due
1 day                            2nd day after return
2 days                          3rd day after return
3 days                          4th day after return

Medications
Prescription and non-prescription medication must be checked in with the nurse before 1st period.  This includes headache medicine, cough syrup, antihistamines, decongestants, etc.

Parking Lot
The parking lot is for staff only.It is not a drop off or pick up place for students, as they are only allowed in the crosswalk of the lot.  For safety reasons, please do not ask your child to meet you in the parking lot.  Visitors may park by the gym or on the street.

Passes
To see the nurse, counselor or an administrator, you must have a pass from the teacher whose class you are missing.  During passing periods, you should get a pass from the teacher you are going to in order not to be counted tardy or absent.

Remediation/Reassessment Procedures
Student grades shall reflect mastery of District objectives, which have been related to essential knowledge and skills.  Students who receive a failing grade on a major test or other assessment that has a major impact on the grade shall have an opportunity to receive remediation and be reassessed for mastery.

SAM (student assignment manual)
All students are expected to have a SAM with them during every period except PE.  Failure to do so will result in detention.  The SAM is not to be altered in any way.

Tardy Policy
Found in your SAM.  Students who arrive late to school will be counted tardy and must get a tardy pass from the office before going to class.  3 tardies = 1 absence.  Arriving late to an individual class will be counted as a tardy as well. Tardies interrupt the operation of a class and therefore considered a disciplinary issue.  The disciplinary actions for tardies are:
        1st tardy, 2nd tardy & 3rd tardy = warnings
4th tardy = 1 restricted lunch (sitting at a designated table away from
        friends - no talking allowed)
        5th tardy = 2 restricted lunches
        6th tardy = 1 office D-hall (3:25 - 5:00)
        7th tardy = 2 office D-halls
        8th tardy = 3 office D-halls
        9th tardy = Saturday school (8:00 - 12:00)
10th tardy = Alternative discipline to be determined by an administrator

Teacher Conferences
Teacher conferences are often important in assuring your student's academic success.  Parents may schedule a conference with the student's teacher or a teacher may request a conference after identifying a student need.
All conferences should be scheduled through Mrs. Hale at 817-547-5011.

Tutorials
Students who are not mastering concepts/skills at 70% or above shall receive additional assistance through remediation either during class time or at a special time set by the teacher.  Students will need to check with the teachers to find out which days are for tutorials.
